Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) 6/14

The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, has been called “Acupuncture without the needles.” It is commonly known as “Tapping”. This is due to it’s literal application when using the technique.

Like Acupuncture, EFT focuses on certain points of the Energy Meridians running through our bodies.

It can help with issues, such as: Anxiety, Stress, Worry, Sleep.

The sequence of the Emotional Freedom Technique, is known as: “The Basic Recipe”.

This involves the following:-

1/ Measure your issue, using either a SUD or SUE Scale.

The SUD Scale
SUD stands for: Subjective Units of Discomfort. It is a scalable measure of 1 to 10. Where 10 is the worst possible and 1 is the best possible.

The SUE Scale
SUE stands for: Subjective Units of Experience.
It too is a scalable measure. This time it is -10 thru to +10, with a 0 right in the middle of the negative and positive numbers.
In this case. -10 is the worst possible and +10 is the best possible.

2/ Create your Set Up Phrase (long version).

It may sound quite obvious when I say you may use any phrase you wish, so long as it is relevant to your issue or concern. Yet some people may, and do have difficulty in this.

The guideline is to use the following: “Even though I have ??? (your issue/concern). I deeply and completely accept myself.”

This you will say – either out loud or to yourself 3 times, whilst continually tapping on your Karate Chop Point. (KC). If you are working with a therapist – they will guide you. So if your issue or concern is worry for instance, then your phrase would be: Even though I have this worry. I deeply and completely accept myself.”

3/ Create your Sequence Phrase (short version).
Using the example above, your shortened version could be: “This worry.” Or: “This worry I have.”

You would tap on the following points 5 to 7 times whilst stating your shortened phrase.

The points to tap, are:

Top of Head.
Eyebrow Point. (EB)
Side of Eye. (SE)
Under the Eye. (UE)
Under the Nose (UN)
Chin (CH)
Collar Bone. (CB)
Under the Arm. (UA)
Outer edge of Thumb. (TH)
Outer edge of Index Finger. (IF)
Outer edge of Middle Finger. (MF)
Outer edge of Little Finger. (LF)
The outer edge refers to where the nail meets skin.

Alternatively. Some Practitioners tap the top of the head at the end of the sequence.

Next. Carry out the Nine Gamut Procedure.

The Gamut Point is located on the back of the hand between the knuckles of the Ring Finger and Little Finger, around a finger’s width away.

The steps to complete whilst tapping this point are:

1/ Close your eyes.
2/ Open your eyes.
3/ Keeping your head centre, look down to the right.
4/ Keeping your head centre, look down to the left.
5/ Roll your eyes – circular movement.
6/ Roll your eyes the other way – circular movement.
7/ Hum 5 seconds of a song (Happy Birthday – for instance).
8/ Count out loud – 1 2 3 4 5.
9/ Hum again 5 seconds of a song.

Take a few deep breaths afterwards – not strained, just enough for you to carry out.

Now measure where you are as previously on either a SUD or SUE Scale.

For those who are new to this, you may wish to check it out further. If so, there is an App available – which I have used myself. It has a free version and a paid version. The App walks you through the sequences and you can set it up for your own particular requirements. It is called:
The Tapping Solution and can be found at: http://www.tappingsolution.com
There is also a Facebook Support Group attached, for those who may be interested.

EFT was developed by Gary Craig, in the 1990’s. It derives from his knowledge of TFT (Thought Field Therapy), which he learnt as a student of Dr. Roger Callahan.

If you wish to check out Gary Craig’s work further, a website you may wish to visit, and one that I have frequented is:- http://www.emofree.com

Thank you for reading.

Next Week I will be discussing: EFT Energy and Thought Field Therapy (TFT).
